A new day, a new “best kept secret” in the world of beauty. Well, while it may seem like there’s too many trends out there to keep up with, and too much that doesn’t live up to the hype, there have been a few buzz words I’ve heard a lot lately that I just had to check out.

Enter hyaluronic acid. Sounds like a mouthful, right? (not to mention something you might not necessarily want to go around slapping on your face).  So, when I heard it being touted as the dry-skinned individual’s saving grace, you know I had to do some beauty recon.

Here’s what I found out:

It’s something our bodies naturally produce.

Apparently, the body naturally contains up to 15 grams of hyaluronic acid, though most of that degrades over time, especially as we age. Somewhere, somehow, I must have retained this information (probably from one of the insanely knowledgeable girls at Sephora)- I normally reach for anti-aging products like Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Skin Tint (only 14$!!!!!)  at the drugstore, since they’re normally more moisturizing and flattering to my skin. It finally makes sense!

It’s the Superman of moisturizers.

If it’s known to help dry skin, I knew it had to be moisturizing, but I had no idea how potent it was. A single hyaluronic acid molecule can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it able to deliver long lasting moisture for the skin to grab onto and absorb.

It’s a universal product.

Too often, a beauty “miracle product” is only good on one skin type. Not so with hyaluronic acid- it can be used with the same results on oily, dry, or combination skin. This is such good news for me- Even though I have dry skin, it leans very slightly towards the combination side, and it’s nice to be use a product that I know will work for me no matter what.

It’s a natural sun protectant.

There’s nothing more damaging to the skin than UVB rays from the sun. Luckily for those of us that spend a lot of time outdoors or have sensitive skin, hyaluronic acid has shielding properties from those harmful rays, meaning that with the use of a good sunscreen like this one from Garnier, you can catch rays all day (just make sure to reapply frequently).

It seems like the benefits are endless! I’m so curious to hear of any drugstore products you guys have come across that work wonders for dry skin, so drop a comment below or shoot me a message!

Keep it real,
