How To Handle Falling Off The Fitness Wagon

I’m going to level with you here. While my eating clean game has never been stronger, I haven’t exactly been to the gym in awhile. A lot of it has to do with my cats eating the laces of my cheap sneakers (which also screwed up my running stride and caused me some considerable discomfort), but any way you slice it, I have fallen off the fitness wagon.

It’s not a good feeling.

It’s easy to let those nagging feelings of self-hatred creep in when you feel like you’ve fallen short of a goal or let yourself down, but the more I think about it, the more determined I am to put this whole self-love thing into practice.

Every one of us has highs and lows, and we all miss a workout here and there. It’s important not to let the valleys dictate how we approach the peaks. Take the following to mind when looking to restart your workout routine:

Take it as a sign to switch things up.

When our workout routines stagnate, it can be easy to slack off. Incorporating something new and fun into your program will eliminate boredom, and get you out there and enjoying the feeling of getting active again.

Identify what motivates you.

This is a toughie. If you’ve lost sight of what your motivating factors were behind getting into the gym in the first place, it’s no wonder your progress has plateaued. It might be time to recenter, reevaluate your priorities and set new goals that reflect that.

Take it slow.

Everyone wants to jump in with both feet when it comes to fitness. Heck, I know that firsthand. But going too hard is a recipe for injury and subsequent inactivity. I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve gone back into the gym after an absence, gone way too hard, limped out, and then been in too much pain to continue on a regular basis. Take the time to get acclimated-  it’s worth it.

Lean on your support network.

I feel so lucky to be connected with some really fab girls in real life and on social media. All of them are pursuing their fitness goals and are so supportive of me- seeing their progress puts a smile on my face, and pushes me to want to live my best life and smash my goals. It’s like having your own personal cheerleading squad!

Splurge on new workout gear.

Ok so this time around, my sister actually said she might give me a pair of her unworn running shoes, but the plan was to meet up with her this weekend anyways and invest in a quality pair that fit me well and didn’t cause any injuries. Having a shiny new fitness gadget or brand new workout outfit is one of the most empowering, motivating things ever!

Remember to be kind to yourself.

I saw this amazing quote (Check my Instagram later for the pic, which was the inspiration behind this post) which went:

“Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do, not a punishment for what you ate”.

I’ve never loved a quote more. Please, please don’t beat yourself up for skipping a few workouts. In the grand scheme of things, your life is made up of so many other important moments. Wellness is about more than obsessive exercise or calorie counting. It’s about restructuring your disordered self-image into something that reflects the wonderful person you are.

This post hits close to home, and as embarrassed as I was at the outset, I feel so blessed to be able to share my thoughts and feelings on this forum. Excited to get back on the horse- and so grateful to look in the mirror today and love what I see looking back, flaws and all, for what feels like the first time in my life.
