Today, let’s talk skincare. As many of you know, I suffer from chronically dry skin. I constantly find myself hopping from brand to brand, trying cleansers and moisturizers like no tomorrow. But I do love face masks- they are often chock full of wholesome products that have tried-and-true benefits for stressed-out skin. Plus, because they sit on your face for a longer period of time, they more effectively strip away oils, gunk, and dead skin cells, leaving your skin refreshed.
But, in the interest of keeping it real, can we talk about the nerve of some skin care brands??! I don’t know about you, but spending an arm and a leg on something I could whip up in my kitchen (with fewer chemicals and preservatives, mind you) sounds like a pretty raw deal to me.
I’ve been stretched pretty thin all month after buying a plane ticket to visit my friends in Boston (but, I mean, there are worse things to be left broke by), so I definitely didn’t want to have to go shopping for supplies even at the grocery store. Luckily, the ingredients for this mask were right in my pantry, so I didn’t even have to leave the house! Bonus, because you know, once I hit the door, boy do those pajama pants go on.
Let’s get into it! You’ll need:
- About 2 tablespoons (or regular spoonfuls) of honey.
- About 2 tablespoons of nutmeg.
- A splash of milk (seriously, you do not need much, probably a teaspoon or two at most).
Honey is absolutely amazing on the skin because it acts as a natural acne-fighting antibacterial substance, has antioxidant properties and is overall a pretty decent moisturizer. Nutmeg, besides making you smell like a sweet lil apple pie (like you aren’t already, come on) is a great exfoliant, and the lactic acid in milk is a real heavy hitter for dry, sensitive skin like mine.
Google the benefits if you don’t believe me- and honestly, I’d recommend it because it’s always good to make sure you’re using the best stuff for your skin type. My skin is so sensitive I have to make sure I do my due diligence.
I like the 2:2:2 equal parts ratio a lot (and I’ve seen any number of this recipe all over the internet, but I honestly feel like you could eyeball it and be just fine. It all depends on how runny or thick you want the consistency to be, I think the end result is the same anyways. And who has time to be measuring all that stuff out? Not me, friend. Not me.
And now for the steps. Are you ready for this complex set of directions?
- Mix the 3 ingredients together.
- Slap it on your face (but skip the eyeballs).
- Set a timer for 10-15 minutes. This would be a good time for a snack break.
- Wash the gunk off with some warm water, apply some moisturizer, bask in your own glow.
I know, a real test of skill. But once you’re done, you’ve got skin that feels rejuvenated and let’s be honest, smells amazing. I do recommend putting on a decent moisturizer since masks tend to slough off a lot of dried skin, and it’s always good to seal in the moisturizing aspects of the mask. I use Weleda’s Skin Food– this is not a paid plug or anything, I just really love the product, and it’s the only moisturizer I’ve ever used that has zero alcohol derivatives or fragrances in it. If I put it on at night, my skin stays smooth throughout the next day. And it’s pretty cheap, so bonus!
